On the 17th of December metal lovers gathered at the Metal Monocle for an evening full of some of Leicester’s best musicians.

Despite some struggles brought onto everyone thanks to Covid passports being implemented the night before the gig, the venue managed to handle entry pretty well, with plenty of people gathering in front of the stage.

The opening band of the evening were The Night I Burned, a female-fronted, melodic metal four-piece. Who, I must say got extra points from me just because they owned one of Synyster Gates’ signature guitars. And seeing as Avenged Sevenfold are my favourite band, just the simple inclusion of that guitar made me predispositioned to enjoy their performance.

You can definitely hear the influence of bands such as Thy Art Is Murder and Parkway drive in the ways in which their music is performed. Overall, they were a great act to kick off the evening with preparing the crowd for Monachopsis and Voidwalker.

Next up we had Monachopsis who I have seen plenty of times before and as always I was very excited to see. Despite some minor technical issues at the very beginning, they managed to deliver an outstanding performance as always, playing old favourites as well as The Carcass Choir from their upcoming EP. Monachopsis are always a highlight of any gig they play and tonight was no different.

Blown amp aside Monachopsis are definitely a band to look out for.

Finally, we had Voidwalker, almost a year after the release of their EP Democratic Fever Dream. The band brought the progressive side of the scene out. Voidwalker are another band which I have had the pleasure of seeing a few times and it appears that they improve more and more with each gig.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for them.

Overall, it was a fantastic evening at The Metal Monocle despite some technical difficulties and I had a lot of fun working my way through all the metal band branded liquor which they had to offer.
