Jazz concert at the Regent Jazz club<\/h1>\n

with the KGB Jazz Band and Gemma Lakin<\/h2>\n

The whole of tonight’s concert was given by the Leicester jazz band KGB<\/strong> with their lead singer Gemma Lakin<\/strong>. Gemma is an artist I have known for a long time and have reported on some of her solo performances several times in the past. She has a beautiful voice and uses it with considerable\u00a0 ability. This was an outstanding concert and one that attracted a fair number of people to the Regent.<\/p>\n

It was a set of songs that varied throughout the evening providing the audience with jaunty songs, rich rhythms and vibrant beats across many styles including swing, latin and jazz and blues. Songs laced with plenty of mood and colour. A few funky numbers that went with a swing. Many recognisable melodies that are generally well-known.<\/p>\n

The band also performed some songs they had written themselves. The band formed in 2008. The band is widely noted for its excellent interpretation of standard and classic jazz numbers.<\/p>\n

On stage tonight, Gemma Lakin, Kath Grainger on sax, Matt Keenan on Guitar, Ian Smith on bass and, on the drums, Nicholas Murphy. Kath played two types of saxophones.<\/p>\n

Songs we heard tonight – a selection – Cry Me A River<\/em> (written by Arthur Hamilton in 1953), Ain’t No Sunshine<\/em> (Bill Withers, 1971), Tequila<\/em> (Daniel Flores, 1958), Misty<\/em> (Erroll Garner, 1954), In A Sentimental Mood<\/em>, (Duke Ellington, 1935), and Feeling Good<\/em> (recorded by several artists including Nina Simone, Michael Buble and Muse.)<\/p>\n
