The first moments feature a dark synth sound, rising slowly from soft beginnings. This morphs into something rhythmical, hinting towards an upbeat and dancey song, with a big drop just around the corner… But then, a finger-snap and sultry vocals backed by piano chords and a leading bass line, and the realisation that we’re hearing a 6/8 lilt. Perceptions adjusted: this is a jazz/soul number? No – just before the minute mark there’s a sudden crash of drums and heavily-filtered guitars, the vocals intensify, and we’re into something much heavier.

From there, it’s a full on blast of those guitars with a brilliant electronic organ riff chiming away underneath. The sonic wave subsides suddenly after that huge chorus, as the next verse unfolds… before a reprise of the chorus. There’s a delicious darkness to the lyrics here, they are well-written to be in harmony with the sonic feel.

“I feel poison like a drug in my brain / I feel poison and I know you feel the same… You can’t get over me”

Later, just as it feels like the song is coming to an end, there’s a slightly disconcerting stutter and (spoiler alert) a surprise key change before the play out. That’s a brave choice; it’s a technique that can sometimes feel overblown or arbitrary. But it works here thanks to the power and the diversity of the song as a whole.

Only formed in 2023, Nobody’s Secret seem to have found their feet very quickly and, despite a short hiatus, the Leicester four-piece came back stronger than ever. They’ve recently appointed new vocalist Jadzia ‘Jazz’ Rock who is clearly a real powerhouse. The result: a band brimming with confidence, and a thumping, high-impact song which is also filled with intrigue.

If they keep writing songs like this, Nobody’s Secret definitely won’t be a secret for much longer.

Nobody’s Secret are: Jadzia ‘Jazz’ Rock (vocals), Jake Freeman (drums), Kyle Hill (guitar) and Johnathan Martin (bass).
