Richard Strauss.
By Andrea Bird
On 2nd June 2026, at De Montfort Hall, the Philharmonia Orchestra played four Richard Strauss pieces: Don Juan, lasting 17 minutes; Rondo Burleske, lasting 18 minutes; Symphonia Domestica, lasting 40 minutes; and Waltzes from Der Rosenkavalier, lasting 13 minutes, over a two-hour period.
The first piece was powerfully played on the oboe together with a collection of horns. Rondo Burleske was played, which is a piece of work from when Strauss was 21, played on the piano by Benjamin Grosvenor. A gentle, warm piece.
The Symphonia Domestica was about Strauss’s domestic life with his wife and child. The orchestra numbered over 50 for this piece. This piece varied in intensity, with strong drums being played.
The orchestra was made up of violins, cellos, bassoons, timpani, clarinet, harps, double basses, horns of all descriptions, drums and a piano. Creating a wonderfully powerful and varying atmosphere throughout the night.
Santtu-Matias Rouvali from Finland was the conductor and Benjamin Grosvenor led on piano (for the Rondo Burleske). Grosvenor is renowned internationally as a soloist. This year, Sweden, Australia and New Zealand are amongst the places he has played. Overall, this was another amazing night by the Philharmonia.
