Ruth Theodore might go down well with the Leicester audience, particularly with the upcoming show at The Big Difference on June 9th, starting at 19:00.
Fresh back from a hugely successful US tour, celebrated British artist Ruth Theodore returns to bring her headline UK solo tour to The Big Difference in Leicester this June, joined by special guest Katie Dahl as the acclaimed US songwriter takes on her first-ever UK tour.

With a brand new album currently in the works and momentum building following a successful fan-backed Kickstarter campaign supporting its creation, the upcoming UK shows offer audiences a rare chance to catch Theodore in an intimate setting during an especially expansive and creatively significant chapter of her career.
Signed to US folk icon Ani DiFranco’s Righteous Babe Records label, Theodore has earned international critical acclaim for her songwriting and recordings, alongside a growing reputation for immersive, audience-connected live performances.
Described by UK press as ‘an institution’, her latest album received a string of 5-star reviews while continuing to build international attention around her work on both sides of the Atlantic.
This upcoming tour follows an expansive two-month period which saw Theodore wow audiences across the US, performing alongside legendary American songwriter Dar Williams, with shows at renowned venues including Seattle’s historic Neptune Theatre, Hollywood’s world famous Troubadour, and back-to-back sold out performances at California’s iconic venue, The Freight, all widely regarded as some of the most respected listening rooms in American folk and acoustic music.
Joining the tour is Katie Dahl, an award-winning American songwriter known for her sharply observed writing, effortless stage warmth and emotionally rich storytelling. Following recent dates touring together in the US, Theodore personally invited Dahl to join the UK run, introducing British audiences to one of the Midwest folk scene’s most distinctive voices.
Ruth’s music is inspired by lived experience which makes her a folk singer in essence, but there’s a strong sense of playful rebellion in her delivery that embodies hints of 1920s vaudeville theatre, buckets of indie punk rock attitude and the relentless lyrical energy of a beat poet.
Over her career Theodore has carved a unique and instantly recognisable style that has seen her described as an “Original Folk Voice” in the Guardian; “A master of the long-form” and “An Institution” in FATEA magazine. As well as inviting record deals with London based label Aveline Records and current US based label Righteous Babe Records.
Special Guest: Katie Dahl (USA). Clear-eyed and tough-minded, songwriter/playwright Katie Dahl is known for her smart songs, wry wit, and wise spirit. A small-town celebrity on the Wisconsin peninsula where her family has lived for 175 years, Katie is also an internationally touring, radio-charting artist who “delivers razor-sharp lyrics with a hearty, soulful voice” (American Songwriter). In live shows that are both courageously honest and devilishly funny, Katie dives deep into questions of land and love, family and body image, grief and joy.
