with Dean Welch and The Steptoos

Dean Welch opened the show. The Leicester singer had a strong voice that he used to good effect. Dean brought a bit of vocal magic to the opening of the show. His clearly articulated words made his songs very listenable. His style of singing had plenty of character. Calling his music ‘alternative’ and ‘indie’, there was no shortage of feeling in what he gave us.

He sang some covers which, I guess, means he also sang some of his own songs too. It was an excellent set. Interestingly, I think he might once have been the frontman of a band called Ibisco, a few years back.

The first band of the night was The Steptoos. This happens to be one of my favourite local bands of all time. Fronted by Oliver Charles, who has also had a prestigious solo career, it was the most delightful set of the band’s own songs and some covers. I particularly enjoyed House of the Rising Sun, the song made famous by The Animals in 1964.

It was just so good to see these guys after so many years. Playing at Duffy’s for the first time, the band gave us a foot-tapping set of songs that were full of punch and vitality. This is another band that has graced the boards of Leicester for many years and are still active today.

Ferris was the headline band tonight. One of Leicester’s longest-serving bands, these guys have become legends on our local scene. Musicians of superb experience, they know how to rock a room, all of them contribute to the vocals (including the drummer) which gives their music depth and quality.

Their offering of richly rhythmic sounds delivered with lashings of personality and provided a good mix of styles and moods. A delicious cocktail of indie, rock and pop is the band’s trademark sound.

Altogether a most enjoyable gig and one which will be remembered for some time to come.
